MudGear Training Tips
Before the StartLine

You have between now and race day to find your AROO! We’re not talking about some balloon of false confidence that bursts in the first half mile of your race. The goal is to show up well-trained and race-ready, beginning with MudGear's “How to Train for a Spartan Race” guide. In it, you’ll learn the most important race tips and unspoken rules of our sport. You’ll also be linked to tons of valuable resources including Spartan’s obstacle demonstration videos, tips for saving on future races, and MudGear’s OCR fitness plan.

Starting From Scratch?

Gear Up:MudGear’s 12-Week Fitness Plan was designed to help new obstacle course racers develop the speed, endurance, and overall fitness required to crush a Spartan Race. The plan encourages participants to begin their first week of training by running for 30 minutes or as long as you can without walking. When you must walk, do it for 1 minute; then, start running again. Repeat until you get to 30 minutes. Record distance and how you feel. Upon the last weeks of the 12-week plan, participants will repeat the run sequence (this time for 40 minutes) and note the improvements. Learn more about Gear Up! from MudGear.

What to Wear?

The first, and most important note on clothing is to wear anything but cotton. Cotton is a horrible choice for any race where you’ll get wet and muddy. Cotton absorbs water, whether from the dunk wall or your sweat, and once cotton gets wet it takes forever to dry. You will carry that water for the rest of the race, and it will be cold and heavy; neither of which makes for a fun experience.
